Building a Culture of Peer Recognition Among Your Childcare Staff

As a center director, you simply cannot be everywhere at once. You will inevitably miss the beautiful moment when your assistant teacher flawlessly handles a massive toddler meltdown. If recognition only comes from the top down, you are severely limiting your center's culture. You need to build a system of peer-to-peer recognition.

Create a shoutout board in the staff breakroom with sticky notes, where teachers can publicly thank their coworkers for jumping in to help clean up a spilled lunch or covering a difficult bathroom break. At your monthly staff meetings, make it a point to read these shoutouts aloud in front of the entire group. When teachers actively look for the good in each other rather than cataloging their frustrations, the entire atmosphere of the building shifts from quietly competitive to deeply collaborative. That shift in culture is worth more to your retention rates than any salary bump you could offer.
