Take a brutally honest look at your staff breakroom today. If it doubles as a storage closet for broken laminators, extra cot sheets, and overflowing recycling bins, you are sending a terrible message to your teachers. A breakroom should be a genuine sanctuary from the extreme sensory overload of a preschool classroom.
Clear out the clutter completely. Invest in comfortable, adult-sized seating rather than discarded plastic classroom chairs. Keep a basket of quality snacks and good coffee fully stocked at all times. Most importantly, strictly enforce a no-work-talk rule in the breakroom. If a teacher is on their scheduled break, they should not be bombarded with questions about a parent email or an upcoming lesson plan. Give them a dedicated space to actually breathe and decompress. Teachers who get genuine rest during their breaks return to the classroom significantly more patient and emotionally regulated than teachers who spent their break answering administrative questions in the hallway.
