Managing Screen Time Policies in a Modern Childcare Facility

Technology is an unavoidable part of modern life. Because children are surrounded by screens at home, many parents expect childcare centers to be entirely tech-free sanctuaries. On the flip side, some centers rely far too heavily on educational videos just to keep the children quiet during chaotic transition periods. You have to find a reasonable, defensible middle ground.

Your center needs a written screen time policy that is strictly enforced. Tablets and smartboards should never be used as passive babysitters. If a screen is on, it must be highly interactive and strictly time-limited. For example, using a tablet for a ten-minute guided yoga session during a rainy day is a fantastic use of technology. Putting on a full-length animated movie every single Friday afternoon is absolutely not. Be fully transparent with your parents about exactly when and how screens are used. When you communicate proactively, you neutralize the complaints from both the tech-averse parents and the parents who expect digital literacy programming.
